Haast Credenza
Description
The Haast credenza is made from ancient matai trees (a native timber of New Zealand) that have fallen naturally into rivers and preserved for hundreds of years under sediment layers before natural water erosion exposes them.
We rescue these trees from the river and continue their journey to become a cherished piece of functional art. This sustainable timber, naturally felled by nature, has been carbon dated at over 1500 years old.
The trees’ location co-ordinates are inscribed on a stainless steel Tréology tag and attached to the credenza, connecting the owner to a unique piece of New Zealand nature.
The front of the credenza is made from fragmented pieces of ancient matai river wood. The design is based on our abstract observation of the ridges and valley's that dissect the New Zealand wilderness landscape.
The matai timber is finished with hand rubbed natural plant oils to bring the stunning grain to life. The steel base has an aged copper finish.
The handles are hand cut leather with an aged copper clamp. The credenza has two hinged doors with an adjustable timber shelf behind each door and a central fold down door with a glass shelf and mirror back.
The credenza base has an aged copper finish acting as a cradle, deliberately simple to avoid competing with the beautiful timber doors. The credenza is then finished with hand rubbed natural plant oil to bring the gorgeous grain to life.
Handmade in Christchurch, New Zealand.
